The Benefits of Data Lineage and Impact Analysis with DOC xPress

Written by Philip de la Cal | Aug 07, 2017

Let's face it - data is the lifeblood of any company. And for SQL Developers and DBAs, knowing the relationships and origins of data can be the difference between meeting a deadline or not.

As a new Product Engineer at Pragmatic Works, I find that a common issue developers face is knowing what is going to break downstream upon making changes to their ecosystem,  like a package or table name, for example. Additionally, a common question may be, "How did my data get into this column?"

This is where lineage and impact analysis come in handy. Lineage analysis is essentially “the family tree” for your data, documenting where your data comes from and goes to. Impact analysis allows you to monitor the resulting effects of any changes implemented.

Pragmatic Works' Lineage and Impact Analyzer feature in DOC xPress gives you an interactive graphical user interface (GUI) that allows you to rapidly explore lineage models and lineage details.

This video demo shows how the Lineage and Impact Analysis feature works in DOC xPress:

  • First, DOC xPress scans all your metadata from your environment and gives you a snapshot. The snapshot gives you a concise, graphical view of your data to show the lineage of that data. You can also see it in a textual view.
  • For example, you can choose to go inside your database and you’ll see a graphical view of how your data gets into your data warehouse and where it goes once it gets there. From there, you can select "High Detail" and get more specific. You can drill down into a certain table or stored procedure, for example, and dig deep to find how data gets into a specific column.
  • Impact analysis allows you to see what areas will be impacted by changes. You can hover over a package or cube and you’ll see exactly what areas in your ecosystem will break by making a change.
  • You can choose "Show More" to get an extra level of visibility and dig deeper into all the steps your data needs to go through to get to a specific column. You can also "Refine" to show less and just see the underlying source.

Most importantly, you don't need to write a single line of code! You can automatically see where your data comes from and goes to, as well as how your data is going to be affected down the line.

This Lineage and Impact Analysis feature is available in Pragmatic Works’ DOC xPress, or as part of our Workbench package. Visit our website or click the download link below to integrate this, and all the fantastic features of DOC xPress, into your data world.
