Monitoring in Azure Analysis Services (Part 3 of 3)

Welcome to the final installment of my mini-series on Azure Analysis Services monitoring. My first session discussed monitoring tool options, the Analysis Services engines and how queries are process. Session 2 was a review of how to use OLAP Profiler Traces to capture data and evaluate events to enable us to monitor server and Analysis Services database activity.

In this final session, I’ll discuss monitoring Azure Analysis Services using Azure Log analytics. Monitoring how your servers are performing with Azure Monitor is an important part of any Analysis Services solution. Azure Analysis Services is integrated with Azure Monitor. I have worked with Analysis Services - both multidimensional, Tabular and on prem - for years and I personally like the Profiler option for monitoring; you can watch my demo of Profiler in session 2.

This post also gives an overview of Azure Monitor and Azure Log Analytics. The Microsoft doc on Azure Monitor FAQs is a great place to learn more.

I’ll also discuss log analytics queries which is based on the Kusto query language (KQL). This rich language is designed to be easy to author and read. This includes an overview of schema which is a collection of tables grouped by logical category, log management category and tables. You can find more information on log analytics queries in the Microsoft doc found here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/analysis-services/analysis-services-logging

The video below contains a demo of monitoring Azure Analysis Services using log analytics, as well as various Kusto queries, so be sure the check this out for a more in-depth look. Hopefully you can learn a few techniques that you can apply to your situation.

I hope this series on monitoring in Azure Analysis Services has been helpful. If you have questions or want help with any Azure product or service, our team of experts and MVPs are here to help. Our consulting and managed services offerings will help you use your data to grow your business.
